Claudio Baraldi (PhD) is Professor of Sociology of cultural and communicative processes at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Department of Studies on Language and Culture. He teaches Social Systems and Cultural Communication, Theory and Methods of Dialogue and Mediation, and Sociology of Conflicts. In addition, Dr. Baraldi is a member of the teaching staff in the Doctoral School in Humanities (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia), and he has been supervisor of several PhD students in the fields of childhood studies, education and cultural and linguistic mediation. He served as external examiner of PhD theses dealing with research in childhood studies. He has trained teachers, educators, social workers, healthcare providers and mediators, in connection with public administrations, schools, health organisations and non-profit organisations.
Dr. Baraldi currently serves as Vice-director of the Research Centre on Peace and Sustainability, and as a member of the scientific board of the Inter-University Research Centre for Analysis of Interaction and Mediation (AIM).
Dr. Baraldi has directed or co-ordinated more than 70 empirical research programmes, and he has published 8 books as unique author, 10 books as co-author, 22 books as editor or co-editor, and 130 papers in national and international collective volumes and journals. Dr. Baraldi is a prolific scholar, and a listing of his publications over the last five years is provided below. His main research interests concern: facilitation/mediation in institutional interactions that involve adult, children and young people; cultural and linguistic mediation in healthcare services; production and management of conflicts; and evaluation analysis of projects, intervention processes and their results. This research is based on the combination of Social Systems Theory, theories of facilitation and mediation, interaction analysis, and non-essentialist theories of intercultural communication. In addition, his research draws upon interdisciplinary team work and systematic connections with institutions (public administrations, schools, healthcare services, non-profit organisations).
Dr. Baraldi is President of the Research Committee 53, Sociology of Childhood (ISA, International Sociological Association) and a member of the Board of the Research Network, Sociology of Children and Childhood (ESA, European Sociological Association). Also, Dr. Baraldi is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journals “Language and Dialogue” (John Benjamins) and “International Journal of Business Communication” (Sage). He has served as a reviewer for the following international journals: Children & Society, Childhood, Intercultural Education, Interpreting, International Journal of Business Communication, and Language and Intercultural Communication.
